Overview:

Self-awareness is often described as an essential leadership skill, but awareness alone does not change how we lead. The real challenge is turning what we notice about our emotions, assumptions, and reactions into more intentional choices and effective action. In this interactive session, David Charles introduces the RISE Method: Reflect, Integrate, Set, Execute, a practical framework that helps project leaders use self-awareness to navigate uncertainty, respond more effectively under pressure, and translate reflection into results.

Learning Objective:

  • Reflect on how emotions, assumptions, and reactions shape how they interpret what is happening.
  • Integrate emotion as useful information by labeling, normalizing, reframing, and redirecting what they are experiencing.
  • Set an intentional direction rooted in what matters most and the outcome they want to create.
  • Execute a small, repeatable action that translates insight and intention into progress.

Dr. Charles is a seasoned business strategist, educator, and executive coach that specializes in helping leaders think deeply and lead wisely in an increasingly complex and technology-driven world. He has held senior leadership roles at CVS Health and John Deere, led large-scale analytics and innovation projects, and developed training programs to build resilience, strengthen adaptability, and develop a future-focused mindset. He currently is a professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign teaching at the Gies College of Business and the School of Information Sciences.
