What is PMI?

Project Management Institute (PMI) is a not-for-profit professional membership association for project managers and program managers.

What is PMI membership?

In a word, dedication. Project Management Institute (PMI) membership signifies that you’re serious about your project management career and your professional development. It highlights this dedication to employers, colleagues and stakeholders, giving you an edge in the job market. It also provides you with access to valuable knowledge, networks and resources.

What is the PMI Manitoba Chapter?

PMI Manitoba is a local component of the international Project Management Institute (PMI®).

How do I become a PMI member?

Can I become a chapter member, then join PMI at a later date?

You must be a member of PMI before you can join a local chapter such as PMI Manitoba.

How long does it take for my PMI Manitoba Chapter Membership to become active?

Your chapter membership will be active once PMI has received payment. You will receive a confirmation email that your chapter membership has been processed. A timely notification response depends on the chapter, typically a few days.

What’s the difference between Student Membership and PMI Membership?

Student Members enjoy the same benefits as PMI Membership except that Student Members receive access to publications in a digital format exclusively.  Please visit  Student Membership for more information.

Can I have a discount on the membership fees?

PMI does not offer discounts on PMI membership fees.

Certification

How do I earn a PMI certification?

To obtain a PMI certification, you must meet the eligibility requirements and pass an exam.  Please review the Certification Process for more information.

How do I find the certification that fits me best?

View the various Certification Types to decide which certification best meets your experience and needs. No certification is a pre-requisite for another.

How do I obtain the required hours for certification?

You must perform the role of project manager for the required number of hours for your certification.  Please review the Application Tips for more information.

Do I have to be a member to apply for a PMI certification?

No. PMI membership is separate from PMI certifications. However, as a PMI member, you will have access to many benefits including discounts on your certification exam fee as well as discounts on professional development opportunities to help with maintenance of your certification(s).

What courses qualify for the project management education requirements for certification?

Courses must be consistent with the Project Management Institute's (PMI ®) Guide to Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK ®).  The project management programs from the University of Winnipeg, Red River College, and the University of Manitoba would qualify along with other approved education providers.  

What is a Project Management Professional (PMP)?

Project Management Professional (PMP)® is the most important industry-recognized certification for project managers.

What is a Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)®?

Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® certification allows an individual to gain recognition for their dedication to professional development while accumulating the necessary hours of experience to qualify to write the PMP Certification exam. None of the certifications are pre-requisites to one another.

What is the PMBOK®?

Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) is PMI's flagship publication and is a fundamental resource for effective project management in any industry. It has been updated to reflect the latest good practices in project management.

Does my PMI certification have an expiry date?

Most PMI certifications are valid for three years. Depending on your certification, you’ll earn either 30 or 60 PDUs per three-year certification cycle. Please review the Maintain Your Certification information on the PMI website for more details.  

Please note: If you hold the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)®, you’ll need to retake the exam before the end of your five-year certification cycle. No PDUs are necessary for CAPM® re-certification.

Exams

How do I schedule an exam?

For all PMI certifications (with the exception of the CAPM) your exam will occur at one of Prometric’s worldwide testing sites. Schedule your appointment online at Prometric.com/PMI  using your eligibility number.  For the CAPM, you can schedule your exam at a testing site or in an online proctored environment through Pearson VUE by logging-in to your MyPMI account and following the prompts.

How do I join a PMI Manitoba study group or mentor program?

What is the eligibility number and how do I obtain one?

Once your application is approved and payment is received, PMI will email you an eligibility number that you’ll use to schedule your exam appointment. You are eligible to write the exam for one year, and you may take the exam up to three times during that year.

Renewals

How long is my membership cycle?

PMI membership is valid for one year from the date of your membership activation. You can renew your membership as early as 90 days from your expiration date. You can find your membership status on your myPMI profile on the PMI website.

What happens if I do not renew my membership on time?

If you do not renew your membership by your expiration date, your membership expires.  You will no longer have access to your membership benefits, such as the discounts on certification, member-only webinars, additional PDU opportunities, and your chapter membership. The membership automatic renewal feature ensures continuous access to your membership benefits without interruption.

When do I need to renew my membership?

You can renew your PMI membership as early as 90 days ahead of your expiration date. Membership renewal is based on the original join date. When renewing within 10 months of the expiration date, your membership will continue to renew during the month you initially joined PMI.

How do I renew my membership?

Log on to PMI.org and go to your myPMI profile. From there, you can access your dashboard to renew your PMI and chapter memberships.

Access to online communities, templates, member-only webinars, virtual events and more can be accessed at www.projectmanagement.com. On the home page, click on the blue button that says “Log in with PMI”. Find what you are looking for using the top-level navigation.

Fees and Payments

How much does it cost to join?

What are the payment methods accepted by PMI?

Payment are made in U.S. dollars via credit card, check or bank transfer. PMI accepts: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club and Discover.

How do I pay for my membership(s)?

Please visit PMI.org to pay for your PMI Annual Membership and PMI Manitoba Chapter fees.

Can my membership be cancelled and refunded?

PMI Membership is non-refundable and non-transferable. You can choose to not renew your PMI membership at the time of your next expiration.

Can I have a discount on the membership dues fee?

PMI does not offer discounts on PMI membership.

How can items or membership be purchased from PMI if tax exempt (GST or PST)?

  • Review the tax exempt information on PMI Marketplace 
  • Email CustomerCare@PMI.org with your PMI ID, specifying what you are purchasing, and attach the tax exempt form to the email
  • Receive a tax exempt invoice from PMI via email
  • Pay the tax exempt invoice following existing processes indicating the tax exempt invoice number.

How do I receive updates from the Chapter on upcoming events?

Please follow us on social media or visit PMI Manitoba.  Social media information can be found on our home page. PMI Manitoba Chapter members are also automatically added to the mailing list.  

Where can I find information on PMI Manitoba events?

PMI Manitoba hosts great events such as the monthly chapter meetings, Project of the Year and conferences. We hope to see you at our next event.

PDUs

What are Professional Development Units (PDUs) and how do I claim them?

Professional Development Units (PDUs) are required for maintaining Project Management Institute (PMI) certification credentials. One PDU is worth one hour of training.  PMI credential holders can claim PDUs by visiting PMI’s website.

How many Professional Development Units (PDUs) do I need to maintain my certification?

All PMI certifications, with the exception of CAPM, require that you engage in continuous professional development in order to remain certified. The requirements for each certification can be found within the CCR Handbook
