January Virtual Chapter Event - “Decision Making & Negotiating – New Insights”

Power Skills

Decision-Making....

Today, we are in a world of BIG-DATA. Your common-sense, judgment, experience, intuition, etc., is totally inadequate. Our decisions ae being contaminated by inherent biases. Additionally, others, manipulate our decisions, with well-designed techniques.

Decisions pertaining to recruiting, site selection, bid evaluation, procurement, etc., are driven by multiple criteria. Selection of relevant criteria, and determining their relative significance, is a challenge.

Learning objectives

  • Recognize human irrationality and illusions that creep into decision making, and put multi-dimensional, real-world problems into proper perspective.
  • Understand key factors that impact decision making.
  • Present and defend decisions with ease.
  • Understand the difference between problem solving and decision making.
  • Define and utilize appropriate criteria in the decision-making process.
  • Implement an analytic hierarchal methodology when making decisions.
  • Minimize risk by validating decisions.

Negotiating....

Anything you want or need is owned or controlled by someone else. Yet, everyone is willing to give you what you want – in return for what they want. But, to get that something on your terms, you must: Negotiate, and be willing to pay the price!

Remember, nothing in life is free – you pay for it indirectly. When you get something for nothing, you just haven’t been billed, yet. There is always a price – if not now, certainly at a later date!

The greatest misunderstanding about negotiating is that it is adversarial in nature. In reality, it is a problem-solving process where each side sees the other as a potential partner – it is not designed for those with a trial or debating mentality.

Learning objectives

  • Introduction to Negotiating & Fundamentals
  • Developing ADO & BATNA
  • The Role of Timing & Who Should Negotiate
  • Impact of Culture & Traditions
  • The “PI” Rule
  • Rules for Buyer & Sellers
  • Mediation; Arbitration & Litigation
  • The JOHARI Window
  • The ADO objectives
  • Influencing & Persuading
  • The Never, Never, Rules
  • Keeping the Negotiation Alive
