Can you tell us about your professional journey and what led you to project management?Peter_Headshot-1.jpg

Peter's story is a rich evolution from hands-on engineering roles to strategic leadership in project delivery. "My transition into project management was a natural extension of my engineering career," he explains. His early work in process engineering and later consulting roles laid a foundation for managing large, complex projects. Over the years, his passion for stakeholder collaboration, business analysis, and problem-solving organically propelled him into project leadership.

You have experience in both industry and academia. How has that shaped your leadership approach?

Peter emphasizes the complementary nature of these worlds. "In academia, leadership means fostering curiosity and mentorship; in industry, it's about strategic execution and tangible results." His academic roles at the University of Manitoba and University of North Dakota sharpened his patience and critical thinking. In contrast, his industry experience taught him agile execution and stakeholder engagement. Balancing both realms has helped him cultivate a flexible and collaborative leadership style.

What are the most important leadership lessons you've learned?

He stresses that empowering others, leading with integrity, and fostering a culture of collaboration have been essential to his effectiveness. He also highlights the importance of resilience and continuous improvement.

"Adaptability, communication, and emotional intelligence are indispensable."

Can you share a pivotal moment that shaped your leadership?

One defining experience came when Peter was tasked with rescuing a failing $3.5M project for a major bank. He re-established client trust, introduced Agile frameworks, and led the team through a successful turnaround. "That project taught me the true value of resilience, strategic planning, and empowerment."

How has project management evolved during your career?

"The role has become more dynamic and tech-driven," Peter observes. He cites the rise of Agile, hybrid work models, and stakeholder-centric delivery.

"Soft skills are just as critical as technical proficiency. We must adapt and lead with both data and empathy."

What challenges are project managers facing today?

Peter outlines key challenges such as remote team management, technological shifts, resource constraints, and maintaining stakeholder alignment. He believes that project managers must balance agility with structure and embrace continuous learning.

How do you see AI and automation changing project management?

Peter sees AI as a game-changer: "It enhances efficiency and decision-making, especially with resource optimization and predictive analytics." But he warns that technology should augment—not replace—human insight and leadership.

What inspired you to take on the role of Vice President of Member Services at PMI Manitoba?

"This role aligns with my passion for mentorship and professional development," he says. Peter values the opportunity to shape strategic programs and guide fellow board members. His leadership ensures chapter members receive consistent, high-value experiences.

What initiatives are you most excited about at PMI Manitoba?

Peter highlights the flagship conferences—Reignite and Elevate—and monthly programs. "I've seen them grow in impact each year. They're vital for member development and community engagement."

"Get involved! Join your local PMI chapter, pursue certifications, find mentors, and volunteer. Project management is about people, purpose, and impact."
